The Meteorological and Early Warning Center of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology in the temporary capital, Aden, has issued a warning regarding unstable weather conditions affecting the Socotra Archipelago and the surrounding Yemeni territorial waters from October 19 to October 21. The forecast indicates varying intensities of thunderstorm rains, which may be heavy in some areas, along with increased wind activity, rising waves, and rough sea conditions.
The center explained in a warning bulletin that the region is experiencing the effects of a low-pressure system located south of the Socotra Archipelago. Numerical model outputs and weather map analyses suggest a likelihood of thunderstorm rains over the archipelago and the adjacent Yemeni territorial waters in the Arabian Sea.
The center noted that the weather impacts may be more severe in the eastern and southern parts of the Socotra Archipelago, with a possibility of locally heavy rainfall. This weather will accompany increased wind activity and higher wave levels, necessitating caution, especially for fishermen and sea-goers.
The chances of scattered rainfall will extend to the Yemeni territorial waters in the eastern part of the Gulf of Aden and parts of the Arabian Sea, with limited effects expected along the eastern coasts of Al-Mahrah Governorate. However, the most significant impacts will concentrate in the marine areas surrounding the Socotra Archipelago.
The center urged residents of the Socotra Archipelago to stay away from riverbeds and flood channels during rainfall and to avoid crossing flowing water. It warned of the potential for local flooding in low-lying areas and reduced visibility during thunderstorms.
Additionally, the center highlighted the dangers posed by thunderstorms, lightning, and sudden downbursts associated with thunderstorm cells. It emphasized the importance of staying away from power poles, billboards, and trees during storms.
The center advised fishermen and sea-goers to take necessary precautions and to continuously monitor marine bulletins and weather updates, particularly in the vicinity of the Socotra Archipelago and the Yemeni territorial waters in the Arabian Sea and eastern Gulf of Aden. The center confirmed that it is monitoring the weather situation around the clock.
