The malnutrition crisis in Hajjah Governorate has escalated significantly, raising urgent concerns for public health.

Alarming Malnutrition Crisis in Hajjah, Yemen

Doctors Without Borders Reports Disturbing Statistics

Doctors Without Borders has revealed shocking figures that highlight the worsening malnutrition crisis in Hajjah, located in northwestern Yemen. The organization reported that its medical teams treated over 1,200 children suffering from life-threatening complications in the first five months of this year.

Details of Affected Children

In a recent statement, the organization noted that its teams at Abs General Hospital treated approximately 1,216 children from January to May 2026. Among these cases, 1,106 children suffered from severe acute malnutrition. This represents a 19% increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring the dire humanitarian situation in the region.

Urgent Need for Immediate Interventions

The organization warned that the lack of urgent interventions and adequate funding could lead to a significant rise in preventable deaths. It is crucial to focus on improving health conditions, especially amid the spread of diseases and malnutrition.

Humanitarian Situation in Abs District

The Abs district faces a tragic humanitarian crisis, with hunger rampant among displaced families. The plight of Umm Hashim’s family exemplifies this disaster; she passed away just days ago after weeks of suffering following her husband’s death, both due to hunger and illness. This tragedy stems from deteriorating living conditions caused by the Houthi coup.

Call for International Support

The situation in Hajjah demands immediate international intervention to provide food and health assistance. Humanitarian organizations must work to address this crisis and ensure that children and their families receive the necessary support during these challenging times.
