UN Human Rights Council Approves Technical Assistance for Yemen’s National Investigation Committee

Geneva, Switzerland – October 12, 2023

In a significant move, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) unanimously adopted Resolution A/HRC/57/L.32 during its 57th session. This resolution focuses on providing technical assistance and capacity building for Yemen’s National Committee to investigate allegations of human rights violations.

Encouraging Cooperation Among Conflict Parties

The council urged all parties involved in the Yemeni conflict to cooperate fully with the National Committee. It emphasized the importance of facilitating transparent access to information, which is crucial for effective investigations into human rights abuses.

Support for Ongoing Investigations

The UNHRC called on the High Commissioner for Human Rights to extend comprehensive technical and logistical support to the National Committee. This support should match the level provided to other investigative bodies, enabling the committee to continue its inquiries into violations committed by all parties in the conflict. The committee aims to align its findings with international standards and will present a comprehensive report on human rights violations across Yemen as soon as it becomes available.

Acknowledging Progress Despite Challenges

The resolution commended the efforts of the National Committee to date, acknowledging the challenges it has faced. The council welcomed the progress made, including regular field visits throughout Yemen and consultations with civil society organizations. Additionally, there has been an improvement in reporting various types of human rights violations and breaches of international humanitarian law by all conflict parties.

This resolution marks a crucial step in addressing the ongoing human rights crisis in Yemen and highlights the international community’s commitment to supporting accountability and justice in the region.
