The Yemen Journalists’ Union has strongly condemned the ongoing detention of journalist Fadh al-Arhabi by Houthi militias in Amran Governorate. Al-Arhabi has faced unjust imprisonment since August 21, 2023, due to his involvement in a publication case. The union highlights the harsh and arbitrary conditions of his detention and criticizes the lack of response from authorities regarding calls for his release.
The union holds the de facto authorities accountable for the ongoing suffering experienced by al-Arhabi and his family, which has persisted since last year. Al-Arhabi previously endured two and a half months of detention related to the same case, leading to significant psychological and economic hardships.
In its statement, the Yemen Journalists’ Union reminded the public of the plight faced by journalists detained by various parties under dire conditions and outside the bounds of the law. The union reiterated its demand for the release of all journalists and those who have been abducted for exercising their rights to freedom of expression.
This ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for improved protections for journalists in Yemen, where freedom of the press remains under severe threat. The union continues to advocate for the rights of all journalists and calls for international support to address these critical issues.
