Minister of Health Emphasizes Importance of Research in Addressing Health Challenges

In a recent meeting held in Aden, Dr. Qassem Muhammad Baheeb, Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population, underscored the critical role of research and systematic scientific evaluation in tackling the challenges facing the healthcare sector. He highlighted the necessity of data analysis and its presentation to decision-makers to effectively confront these issues.

Launch of the National Institute of Public Health

During his address at the inaugural meeting of the Advisory Council for the National Institute of Public Health, Minister Baheeb stated, “The institute represents a solid foundation for conducting impactful scientific research that identifies health problems and recommends viable solutions.” He expressed optimism that this meeting marks the beginning of a new phase in enhancing public health in Yemen.

Vision for Future Health Sector Improvements

Minister Baheeb outlined a future vision for the health sector, focusing on improving healthcare quality, enhancing disease prevention, and developing a health system that aligns with the latest global standards. He emphasized that the National Institute of Public Health serves as a cornerstone in achieving this vision, acting as a primary source for research and studies that facilitate informed decision-making and sound health policies.

Collaborative Efforts for Effective Solutions

The Minister stressed the importance of collaborative efforts, urging enhanced cooperation and knowledge exchange between the institute and its advisors. He asserted that collective action and adherence to scientific and technical principles will yield tangible results, providing effective solutions to current health issues, including chronic disease management, health awareness, and reducing the impact of infectious diseases.

Call for Unified Medical Research Portal

Dr. Ali Al-Walidi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Primary Healthcare, emphasized the need to establish a unified portal for impactful medical research. He advocated for improved coordination among specialized programs to address challenges and promote the concept of One Health.

Discussion on Cholera and Future Plans

The meeting included discussions with Dr. Hanadi Awad, a public health expert from the World Health Organization, and Dr. Mohamed Abu Khdeir from the Middle Eastern Network for Community Health. They reviewed the institute’s action plan for 2025, a training program on the One Health approach, and the current status of the cholera epidemic, along with measures to curb its spread.

This collaborative effort aims to strengthen Yemen’s healthcare system and improve public health outcomes through research-driven strategies and coordinated initiatives.
