The Yemeni government has confirmed that the Houthi militia has targeted Aden International Airport with ballistic missiles for the sixth time in recent days. This ongoing assault poses significant risks to civilian safety and commercial aviation.
In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the government emphasized that the airport serves not only as a key air gateway for the country but also as a vital artery for the movement of Yemenis from various provinces. Additionally, it facilitates the delivery of food, medical, and humanitarian aid to those in need across the nation.
The government stated that the repeated attacks on a civilian airport represent a direct threat to travelers, flight crews, and airport personnel. These actions cannot be dismissed as isolated security incidents; rather, they constitute a serious danger to civil aviation safety and the citizens’ right to safe travel. Furthermore, these attacks jeopardize the humanitarian efforts that millions of Yemenis rely on.
The government underscored that protecting the airport and ensuring its continued operation is a direct national responsibility. State institutions are actively assessing risks and enhancing security and technical measures to maintain service continuity in accordance with safety requirements. They are also documenting the assaults and following up with relevant international authorities.
The government asserted that targeting civilian facilities necessitates international action that goes beyond mere expressions of concern and condemnation. It called for clear and effective measures to protect civilian airports, uphold international law, hold accountable those responsible for these attacks, and prevent the transformation of facilities serving civilians into military targets.
The government renewed its call to the United Nations and relevant international organizations, particularly the International Civil Aviation Organization, to fulfill their responsibilities regarding the repeated threats to Aden Airport. It urged these bodies to provide necessary guarantees for civil aviation safety and to protect the movement of travelers and humanitarian supplies.
The government affirmed that these assaults will not deter it from fulfilling its duties to the citizens. Aden International Airport will remain a civilian facility that serves all Yemenis and safeguards their right to travel and receive aid.
