On Tuesday, Major General Shalal Ali Shayea, head of Yemen’s Counter-Terrorism Unit, met with a delegation from the United Nations Secretary-General’s office. The discussion focused on enhancing security and stability in Yemen amid ongoing challenges.
During the meeting, Major General Shayea reviewed the significant security achievements made by counter-terrorism forces. He also addressed the humanitarian violations committed by Houthi militias against civilians. Shayea emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in liberated areas and called for unified efforts to tackle security challenges.
Major General Shayea reiterated his concerns regarding the dangerous coordination between Houthi militias and terrorist organizations, including Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Al-Shabaab. He explained that this connection poses a direct threat to international navigation in the Red and Arabian Seas, facilitating safe routes for smuggling operations aligned with Iranian agendas.
Shayea stressed the need for the international community to reassess its stance toward Houthi militias. He highlighted the urgency of taking decisive actions to cut off funding sources for the Houthis, warning that ignoring these threats could have severe implications for regional and global security. Such measures are essential for ensuring stability in the region.
In response, the UN delegation reaffirmed its commitment to continue coordinating and collaborating with the Yemeni government. They expressed a desire to support efforts aimed at achieving security and stability while combating terrorism in the country. The UN aims to strengthen partnerships with Yemeni security institutions to address current challenges effectively.
