Human Rights Minister Engages with EU Delegation

ADEN – SABA – On December 5, 2026, Yemen’s Human Rights Minister, Mashdal Omar, convened with a delegation from the European Union in Aden, led by Ambassador Patrick Simonnet. The meeting centered on fostering collaboration in the realm of human rights, supporting institutional reforms, and safeguarding individual freedoms.

Commitment to Upholding Human Rights

During the discussions, Minister Mashdal reaffirmed the Yemeni government’s dedication to meeting both its national and international human rights obligations, despite the numerous challenges currently facing the nation. He stressed the critical importance of maintaining the rule of law, enhancing national institutions, and improving the overall state of rights and freedoms within Yemen.

Priorities for Future Actions

The minister outlined key priorities for the Ministry of Human Rights moving forward, which include bolstering monitoring and documentation mechanisms. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity of augmenting the competence of institutional staff and developing the capabilities of national entities tasked with law enforcement.

Addressing Humanitarian Concerns

Minister Mashdal specifically addressed the pressing issues of abductions and enforced disappearances, highlighting the profound suffering these cases inflict on families, particularly mothers. He underscored that resolving these concerns is a top priority for the government and is viewed primarily as a humanitarian issue. He mentioned ongoing efforts to coordinate with the Attorney General’s office to shut down unofficial detention centers and improve conditions for detainees.

EU Support and Future Collaboration

Ambassador Simonnet commended the minister for what he termed “early and positive steps,” particularly the field visits to detention centers and prisons. He regarded these initiatives as a significant signal of Yemen’s commitment to human rights. The ambassador also expressed the EU’s eagerness to enhance collaboration with the Yemeni government in areas such as capacity building and aligning national laws with international standards.
