Minister of Defense Meets EU Delegation in Aden

Aden, Yemen – Today, Minister of Defense Major General Taher Al-Aqeeli held a significant meeting with Patrick Simonnet, the Head of the European Union Mission to Yemen, alongside Catherine Colonna, the French Ambassador to Yemen. The discussions focused on the evolving military and security situation in Yemen, as well as the broader regional and international developments that have implications for the country.

Military and Security Priorities Discussed

During the meeting, Major General Al-Aqeeli articulated the Ministry of Defense’s current priorities, which include enhancing the capabilities of the armed forces and improving their defensive capacities. He emphasized the critical need for ongoing support in counter-terrorism efforts and the safeguarding of maritime navigation routes, underscoring that these challenges necessitate effective international coordination.

European Support for Yemen and International Cooperation

The Minister acknowledged the significant role of European support for Yemen, particularly in efforts to restore state institutions and bring an end to the Houthi militia’s insurgency, which is reportedly backed by the Iranian regime. Al-Aqeeli stressed the urgency of bolstering the armed forces to ensure they can maintain security and stability throughout the nation.

This meeting also highlighted the importance of international cooperation in fostering security and stability in Yemen. The support from European nations, especially France, is crucial in strengthening initiatives aimed at restoring state authority. Furthermore, collaboration with the EU mission is vital in addressing the security challenges that Yemen faces today.

Such dialogues reflect the legitimate Yemeni government’s commitment to working alongside the international community to support its efforts in achieving security and stability amid ongoing challenges.
