Bahrain Hosts Extraordinary Meeting of Tourism Ministers
Jassem Al-Budaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), emphasized that the escalating challenges in the region represent a significant test of the GCC’s ability to protect its achievements and ensure the sustainability of vital sectors. He made these remarks during an extraordinary meeting of the GCC Tourism Ministers, held virtually and chaired by Bahrain’s Minister of Tourism, Fatima Al-Sairafi.
Urgent Need for Enhanced Coordination
Al-Budaiwi noted that the current meeting occurs at a critical juncture, as GCC countries face aggressive Iranian actions. This situation necessitates a shift from traditional coordination to a higher level of practical integration and effective response. He highlighted that the tourism sector serves as a cornerstone for achieving economic sustainability. The GCC has established itself as a global tourist destination, making tourism one of the fastest-growing sectors contributing to economic diversification.
Tourism Statistics and Economic Impact
During his address, Al-Budaiwi shared statistics from the Gulf Statistical Center for 2024, revealing that GCC countries welcomed over 72 million tourists, generating nearly $120 billion in revenue. However, due to the ongoing military escalation in the region, projections indicate a potential decline of 8 to 19 million tourists, leading to estimated losses in tourism revenue ranging from $13 billion to $32 billion.
Resilience Amidst Challenges
The Secretary-General expressed confidence in the GCC’s ability to overcome crises and challenges effectively. He pointed to the strong ties and effective integration among member states as key factors in enhancing their capacity to address challenges. This collaborative approach has helped maintain stability within the GCC and ensure the efficient operation of vital sectors, showcasing the strength and effectiveness of joint Gulf efforts under various circumstances.
As the GCC navigates these turbulent times, the focus remains on enhancing cooperation and resilience in the tourism sector. The commitment to safeguarding economic achievements and ensuring sustainability will be crucial in the face of ongoing regional challenges.
