Minister of Foreign Affairs Discusses Humanitarian Response with UN Coordinator

Today, in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Afrah Al-Zouba, met with Laurent Bukera, the Acting Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for the United Nations in Yemen. They addressed the latest developments and the implications of the recent escalation by the Houthi terrorist militias, which are backed by the Iranian regime. The discussion focused on ways to enhance cooperation between the government and the United Nations to meet humanitarian and developmental needs.

Political and Humanitarian Developments

The meeting included Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Mohammed Al-Faqmi, and Minister of State, Walid Al-Abara. They discussed the political and field developments and their impact on humanitarian conditions. The officials highlighted the government’s efforts to protect civilians, facilitate the work of UN agencies and humanitarian organizations, and ensure that aid reaches those in need.

Strengthening UN Presence and Coordination

Minister Al-Zouba emphasized the importance of enhancing the presence and operations of UN agencies from the temporary capital of Aden and the liberated provinces. She called for developing coordination mechanisms with relevant government entities to expedite responses to urgent needs and improve efficiency. Furthermore, she stressed the necessity for relief interventions to complement the strengthening of national institutions and expand sustainable development programs, which would help improve services and alleviate the suffering of citizens.

Addressing Houthi Violations

The minister asserted that the Houthi violations against UN staff and their facilities necessitate a clear stance that reflects in the organization’s policies and procedures to protect its employees and uphold the independence and integrity of humanitarian work. She insisted that these practices should not be treated as a fait accompli, nor should any steps be taken that would reward such actions or undermine the ability of organizations to perform their duties.

UN Efforts and Coordination

In response, Bukera outlined the efforts of the United Nations and its agencies in addressing the current developments and responding to increasing needs. He reaffirmed the commitment to continue coordinating with the Yemeni government, international funds, and donors to support emergency responses and maintain developmental programs that meet the needs of the Yemeni people.
