In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Dr. Shafiqa Said, the Chairperson of the National Women’s Committee, engaged with representatives from the European Union (EU) and the World Bank. The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration and support for Yemeni women amid ongoing challenges.
During the meeting, Dr. Said outlined the key objectives and responsibilities of the National Women’s Committee. As the governmental body addressing women’s issues, the committee plays a crucial role in developing strategic plans, compiling reports on women’s status, and conducting research on gender-related topics. This includes analyzing international reports such as the Beijing Declaration and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Furthermore, the committee emphasizes building capacity and empowering women politically, economically, and socially, while also reviewing relevant legislation and laws concerning women’s rights.
Dr. Said highlighted the significant challenges the committee encounters due to the ongoing economic crisis, exacerbated by the war instigated by Houthi militias. She expressed hope for establishing effective cooperation mechanisms with the European delegation and the World Bank, noting the efforts the committee has made alongside women’s civil society organizations to promote women’s participation in decision-making roles.
The Chairperson underscored the importance of supporting governmental efforts aimed at improving general conditions and alleviating citizens’ suffering. She called for actions that would bolster economic reforms and enhance the overall well-being of the population.
In response, members of the European delegation affirmed their commitment to collaborating with the National Women’s Committee. They emphasized the need to prioritize women’s issues and identify the necessary resources to support women’s rights in Yemen.
This meeting marks a pivotal step towards fostering international partnerships aimed at empowering women in Yemen, as the nation continues to navigate complex socio-economic challenges.
