Sana’a, Yemen – Today, Engineer Salem Kaaiti, the Executive Director of Safer Exploration and Production Company, met with Thomas Schneider, the German Ambassador to Yemen, to address several pressing issues in the energy sector. The discussion focused on the challenges facing the company amid the country’s exceptional circumstances.
The meeting, attended by Deputy German Ambassador Sophia Hertzberg, Yemeni Gas Company Director Engineer Mohsen Ben Waheit, and Safer’s Deputy Executive Director Ghaleb Mabkhout Ma’ili, began with Engineer Kaaiti welcoming Ambassador Schneider. He emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation and partnerships with international allies to support the energy sector and enhance the capabilities of local companies.
Engineer Kaaiti highlighted Safer’s vital role in the oil and gas sectors. He outlined the efforts made to maintain operational continuity despite significant challenges. Notably, he pointed to the cessation of oil product and liquefied natural gas exports, which has led to economic and operational repercussions affecting maintenance, upgrades, and development projects.
Kaaiti stressed that the ongoing situation imposes substantial burdens on both the company and the national economy. He noted that the oil and gas sector serves as a fundamental pillar for public revenues. Therefore, he called for collaborative efforts, both locally and internationally, to stabilize the energy sector and enable it to fulfill its developmental role.
The meeting also addressed the importance of leveraging German expertise in renewable energy. The two sides discussed opportunities for technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, and capacity building. They explored ways to implement modern technologies to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and align with global trends toward clean energy and environmental sustainability.
Both parties examined strategies to enhance cooperation and capitalize on investment opportunities in the energy sector. This includes expanding the use of renewable energy sources and sharing experiences that support sustainable development and improve the sector’s efficiency in Yemen.
Ambassador Schneider expressed his interest in understanding the current state of the oil and gas sector and its challenges. He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting developmental initiatives and enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Schneider praised Safer’s role in contributing to the national economy and emphasized the importance of ongoing communication and coordination to explore new avenues for collaboration that serve shared interests and support Yemen’s development efforts.
The meeting signifies a crucial step toward fostering international partnerships that can help address the challenges facing Yemen’s energy sector while promoting sustainable development.
