The Arab League has highlighted the importance of strengthening the capabilities of Arab countries to face disasters and reduce their risks. This initiative aims to provide accurate information and statistics that support decision-making and the formulation of preventive policies. Additionally, it seeks to develop early warning systems, prepare for crises, protect communities, and minimize human and material losses.
This statement emerged during a regional workshop focused on disaster-related statistics, held at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo. The workshop, titled “Enhancing Disaster Data Systems for Evidence-Based Policy Making and Proactive Action,” is organized in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
The workshop, which will continue until October 29, discusses ways to enhance cooperation among national disaster management bodies and statistical agencies in Arab countries. Participants will exchange technical expertise and learn from international partners to improve data collection, analysis, and utilization in addressing crises and disasters.
The workshop aims to support the establishment of integrated disaster data systems. It emphasizes the reliance on evidence and accurate statistics in preparing policies and preventive plans. This approach will contribute to increasing the readiness of Arab countries to handle various risks and crises.
