Today, Dr. Qassem Baheeb, Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population, met with leaders from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in Geneva. The discussions centered on the implementation of health projects funded by the Global Fund in Yemen, as well as exploring strategies to strengthen partnerships that support the healthcare system amid escalating humanitarian and epidemic challenges.
During the meeting, which included Dr. Lynn Sosi, the Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa, and Dr. Betty Ochieng, the Director of Funding and Grants for the regions, participants reviewed the progress of programs supported by the Global Fund. They specifically highlighted ongoing efforts to combat malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS, along with initiatives that aim to strengthen health systems and enhance the capacity of Yemen’s healthcare sector.
The discussions also addressed technical and financial reports related to current projects. Participants examined future directions and upcoming funding cycles, while exploring opportunities for enhanced collaboration. They underscored the importance of governance, risk management, and prioritizing health needs for the next phase of health initiatives in Yemen.
Minister Baheeb praised the pivotal role of the Global Fund in supporting Yemen’s health sector, noting that the Fund’s interventions have led to significant achievements, allowing the maintenance of essential health services despite the extraordinary circumstances the country has endured for over a decade.
Addressing the complex health challenges facing Yemen, the Minister highlighted the urgent need for continued funding. He emphasized the necessity of building on past successes, as Yemen contends with multifaceted health and humanitarian issues, including the internal displacement of millions and ongoing waves of irregular migration from the Horn of Africa. These factors exert increasing pressure on the healthcare system and introduce new diseases and vectors previously unknown in Yemen.
Minister Baheeb urged the international community to keep Yemen a priority, despite a global decline in humanitarian and developmental funding. He emphasized the unique humanitarian and health situation in Yemen, while also mentioning that the Yemeni government is actively seeking sustainable local funding sources to bolster the resilience of the health system and reduce reliance on emergency funding.
