During a recent ministerial session of the UN Security Council dedicated to maritime safety, Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, underscored the significant developments affecting the Gulf region, with a particular focus on the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway serves as a crucial artery for the global economy, making its security paramount.
Ambassador Al-Wasil highlighted that any threat to freedom of navigation not only disrupts maritime operations but also adversely affects the stability of energy markets and the integrity of international supply chains. He pointed out that safeguarding navigation within the Strait of Hormuz necessitates strict adherence to international law and calls for enhanced global cooperation to ensure maritime freedom. Additionally, he urged compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which was established in 2026, to uphold these principles.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reiterated its commitment to supporting both international and regional efforts aimed at reducing tensions and preventing conflicts. In this regard, Ambassador Al-Wasil referenced Pakistan’s mediation initiatives between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the critical role such efforts play in fostering stability within the region.
In his concluding remarks, Ambassador Al-Wasil called upon the Security Council to issue a definitive condemnation of Iranian attacks against Saudi Arabia since the onset of the current crisis. He stressed that the protection of maritime corridors is an urgent necessity for global economic stability, which demands a robust and effective response from the international community to address these ongoing threats.
