Sana’a: Houthi militia attempts to seize multiple homes owned by the Al-Ahmar family.

Houthi Militia Attempts to Seize Properties of Prominent Al-Ahmar Family in Sana'a

A member of Yemen’s influential Al-Ahmar family has revealed the Houthi militia’s ongoing efforts to illegally appropriate several homes owned by family members, including deceased relatives, in Sana’a, the capital currently under Houthi control.

Al-Ahmar Family’s Concerns

Abdullah Al-Ahmar, grandson of the late tribal leader Abdullah bin Hussein Al-Ahmar and son of parliamentarian Hamid Al-Ahmar, stated that the Houthi militia aims to seize multiple properties belonging to the Al-Ahmar family in the Sofan neighborhood of the Al-Hasaba district in Sana’a.

He clarified recent discussions regarding the militia’s intentions to take over the residence of his uncle, the current tribal leader Sheikh Hamir Al-Ahmar. Abdullah emphasized that while the Sheikh resides in a well-known home in Al-Hasaba, the properties targeted by the Houthis are located in Sofan and belong to his relatives.

Historical Context of the Properties

In a post on his Facebook page, which was noted by a Yemen Youth Net editor, Abdullah detailed the significance of these homes. One property belongs to the widow of the late Sheikh (Umm Hamir), while another is owned by the daughter of the martyr Hamid bin Hussein Al-Ahmar, who was executed by the Imam in Hajja before the revolution. He mentioned additional properties that are also part of the family’s legacy.

Abdullah added a sarcastic remark, suggesting that the Houthis might have found a tunnel to Gaza beneath their homes or have lost their way while searching for a route to the suburbs.

Criticism of Houthi Leadership

Addressing Houthi leader Mohammed al-Bukhiti, who publicly expressed solidarity with Sheikh Hamid Al-Ahmar following recent U.S. sanctions, Abdullah urged him to conserve his efforts. He pointed out that the militia could not refrain from looting even for a month after the U.S. Treasury’s directive, highlighting the inconsistency between Bukhiti’s statements and the militia’s actions.

Ongoing Struggles Against Houthi Oppression

Abdullah noted that the current attempts by the Houthis to seize properties pale in comparison to the extensive looting of their possessions that has occurred in the past. He underscored the daily oppressive practices faced by the Yemeni people under the militia’s rule.

These developments come weeks after the U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on Sheikh Hamid Al-Ahmar and several of his businesses, alleging support for the Islamic resistance movement Hamas.

Historical Context of Al-Ahmar Family’s Struggles

The Al-Ahmar family, including parliamentarian and businessman Hamid Al-Ahmar, has faced significant challenges, with the Houthi militia previously appropriating numerous homes, properties, and businesses belonging to them. This includes the telecommunications company SabaFon and Saba Islamic Bank.

The situation remains tense in Sana’a as the Al-Ahmar family continues to resist the Houthi militia’s aggressive tactics and protect their heritage.
