Presidential Leadership Council member Othman Majali meets with the British Ambassador to Yemen.
Othman Majali Meets UK Ambassador to Yemen: Focus on Bilateral Relations and Regional Developments
On Sunday, Othman Majali, a member of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, met with Abda Sharif, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Yemen. The two officials discussed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Yemen and the UK, emphasizing shared interests and ongoing coordination in combating terrorism. They also addressed the need to support the Yemeni economy and the government’s various programs.
Concerns Over Houthi Actions
During the meeting, Majali expressed his astonishment at the silence of international organizations regarding the actions of the Houthi militia. He condemned their continued acts of terrorism, including the abduction and mistreatment of humanitarian workers and innocent civilians in areas under their control. Majali asserted that the international community must recognize the true nature of the Houthi group, which has concealed its aggressive behavior while portraying itself as a victim. He pointed out that the Houthis have committed heinous crimes against the Yemeni people for over two decades, a behavior that has persisted since the group’s emergence in the caves of Saada, supported by Iran.
Iran’s Exploitation of Yemen’s Geopolitical Situation
Majali highlighted Iran’s exploitation of the current international confusion and Yemen’s challenging geography to support the Houthi movement. He accused Iran of using the Houthis to implement destructive projects aimed at strangling the global economy. This strategy has manifested in attacks on ships and neighboring countries, as well as the mining of the Red Sea.
Appreciation for Coalition Efforts
Majali acknowledged the significant role played by the Saudi-led coalition, particularly during Operation Decisive Storm, in thwarting the Iranian-backed Houthi agenda. He praised the generous financial, economic, and humanitarian support provided by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which aims to achieve security, stability, and the establishment of a national army in Yemen.
International Responsibility
The member of the Presidential Leadership Council emphasized the responsibility of the international community to support the leadership council and the Yemeni government. He urged for increased military assistance to strengthen the national army’s capabilities in facing threats. Furthermore, he called for transforming liberated areas into centers for economic development to address ongoing economic challenges and to bolster the central bank’s position in safeguarding the national currency.
Condemnation of Israeli Actions
Majali also condemned the brutal actions of the Israeli entity against civilians in Gaza and Lebanon. He criticized the indiscriminate destruction of residential buildings and civilian facilities, calling these acts violations of international humanitarian law. He urged the international community, particularly the UK, to exert pressure to halt the Israeli aggression that undermines the basic elements of life and continues to provoke Arab and Muslim communities.
UK’s Commitment to Supporting Yemen
In response, Ambassador Abda Sharif reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to providing full support to the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government. She emphasized the importance of overcoming challenges and building a robust economic and political framework in Yemen through regional and international partnerships.
This meeting underscores the ongoing collaboration between Yemen and the UK, highlighting shared goals in addressing regional instability and promoting peace.
