Patient detained in Ibb for failing to pay medical treatment costs.

Patient Detained in Ibb Due to Unpaid Medical Bills

Details of the Patient’s Detention

Medical sources report that the administration of Al-Thawra General Hospital in Ibb has detained a patient due to his inability to pay the remaining treatment costs. The patient, Salem Mohammed Habah Suleiman, has been in the hospital for several days. Although his doctor permitted him to leave, hospital management refused to release him until his family pays the outstanding amount, which totals 150,000 Yemeni rials. This situation has led to the patient’s continued detention for over a week.

Implications for Patient Rights

This incident highlights the severe deprivation of basic health rights faced by ordinary citizens. Hospitals, which should provide essential healthcare, have instead become centers for treating militia members. Since the Houthi takeover of Ibb in October 2014, Al-Thawra Hospital, the largest medical facility in the province, has primarily served the militia’s injured fighters.

Humanitarian Crisis in Houthi-Controlled Areas

This case exemplifies the blatant violations of citizens’ rights in Houthi-controlled regions. Many residents struggle to access healthcare due to overwhelming financial burdens. The dire circumstances necessitate immediate intervention from relevant authorities to protect patient rights and ensure access to necessary medical treatment.
