National Committee Discusses Prison Conditions and Human Rights Protections with Taiz Judicial Authorities

Today, the National Committee for the Investigation of Human Rights Violations held a comprehensive meeting with representatives of the judiciary in Taiz Governorate to discuss the committee’s observations on prison conditions, detention centers, and mechanisms for protecting human rights.

The meeting included key judicial figures from Taiz, such as the Prosecutors of West Taiz, Judge Abdulrahman Qasem, East Taiz, Judge Mohammed Al-Raini, and the Criminal Court, Judge Abdulfattah Al-Qumairi. Committee member Judge Ishraq Al-Muqtari addressed several files the committee is following, including issues related to the specialized criminal prosecution and ongoing cooperation mechanisms between the committee and the Taiz judiciary aimed at ensuring fair trials and access to justice for all citizens, especially amid the ongoing war and the high volume of cases in the courts.

Judges from the Taiz prosecutions outlined recent steps and achievements in advancing cases sent to the criminal prosecution, particularly following the decision to establish the prosecution and forward cases for trial, and the increased workload during 2024. They appreciated the committee’s diligence in monitoring numerous files, which ensures cooperation with the judiciary in enforcing the law.

The National Committee’s team also learned about the challenges facing the judicial process and the performance of the judiciary in the eastern and western prosecutions of Taiz, including issues related to suitable buildings and locations, the needs of all prosecutions and their departments, and other essential resources, especially with the destruction of the judicial complex in Al-Muzaffar directorate.

This meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to address human rights violations and improve the judicial system in Taiz amidst challenging circumstances.
