A recent eruption of Mount Dukono on Halmahera Island in eastern Indonesia has resulted in the tragic deaths of three climbers, including two foreign nationals and a local resident. Local police have confirmed that ten additional climbers are still missing following the eruption, which occurred in the early hours of the morning.

Erlichson Pasaribu, head of North Halmahera Police, reported that the victims included two foreigners and a local resident from Ternate Island. The eruption produced a loud explosion and generated a thick plume of smoke that rose approximately 10 kilometers above the volcano’s summit in North Maluku Province, alarming both climbers and local residents.
Impact on Local Residents
Lana Saria, head of the Geological Agency, indicated that volcanic ash is drifting northward, prompting warnings for residents, particularly in the city of Tobelo, regarding the dangers of ashfall. Local citizens are urged to remain vigilant about potential health impacts and disruptions to transportation services as a result of the volcanic activity.
Volcanic Alert Level
Mount Dukono is currently under a level three alert status, the second highest on Indonesia’s four-tier volcanic alert system. Since December, the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) has advised against approaching within 4 kilometers of the Malupang and Ariyang craters. This warning is critical for ensuring the safety of climbers and local communities in the vicinity.
