UN Agencies Warn of Growing Humanitarian Needs in Sudan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have issued a warning about the escalating humanitarian needs in Sudan. Approximately 15.4 million people require emergency shelter and essential household items. However, humanitarian assistance reaches only about 10 percent of those in need due to a lack of funding.

Displacement Crisis

The agencies reported that women and children make up three-quarters of the displaced population. Over 5.2 million people have returned to their areas, only to find many of their homes destroyed or looted amid a severe shortage of basic services.

Funding Shortfalls

The 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan has received only 47 percent of the total funding required, which amounts to 2.9 billion dollars. This shortfall threatens to worsen the humanitarian situation and limits the ability of organizations to meet the increasing needs of those affected.
