Major General Shayea Engages UN Delegation on Houthi Escalation and Security Challenges in Yemen

Major General Shayea Engages UN Delegation on Security Challenges

On Tuesday, Major General Shalal Ali Shayea, the head of Yemen’s Counter-Terrorism Unit, convened with a delegation from the United Nations Secretary-General’s office. The discussions centered on the imperative of enhancing security and stability in Yemen amidst ongoing challenges posed by various factions.

Highlighting Security Achievements and Addressing Houthi Violations

During the meeting, Major General Shayea took the opportunity to review the notable security achievements made by Yemen’s counter-terrorism forces. He pointed out the humanitarian violations perpetrated by Houthi militias against civilians, emphasizing the critical need to maintain peace in areas liberated from Houthi control. Shayea called for a unified approach to address the multifaceted security challenges that Yemen currently faces.

Concerns Over Houthi and Terrorist Coordination

Major General Shayea expressed serious concerns regarding the dangerous collaboration between Houthi militias and terrorist organizations, including Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Al-Shabaab. He articulated that this connection poses a direct threat to international navigation in the Red and Arabian Seas, facilitating smuggling operations aligned with Iranian interests.

Furthermore, Shayea urged the international community to reevaluate its stance toward the Houthi militias. He underscored the urgency of implementing decisive actions to sever funding sources that sustain the Houthis, warning that neglecting these threats could have dire ramifications for regional and global security. Such measures are deemed essential for ensuring long-term stability in the region.

UN Commitment to Supporting Yemen’s Stability Efforts

In response to Major General Shayea’s concerns, the UN delegation reaffirmed its commitment to coordinating and collaborating with the Yemeni government. They expressed a willingness to support initiatives aimed at achieving security and stability while combating terrorism in the country. The UN aims to strengthen partnerships with Yemeni security institutions to effectively address the pressing challenges at hand.

The ongoing dialogue highlights the need for concerted efforts in the face of escalating tensions and the importance of global support for Yemen’s pursuit of peace and security.
