Goalkeeper Mike Maignan of AC Milan and the French national team has issued an apology to his club’s supporters following his red card during the team’s three-nil defeat to Bournemouth in the Europa League. He emphasized that the action leading to the red card was unintentional.
Maignan received a direct red card in the twenty-eighth minute of the match after a collision with American midfielder Tyler Adams while executing a corner kick. This incident forced Milan to continue the game with only ten players.
In a message shared on his Instagram account, Maignan explained that he was attempting, as goalkeepers do in matches, to create space within his penalty area. He acknowledged that the incident presented a poor image, particularly for young viewers watching the game.
The French goalkeeper criticized some interpretations of the incident provided by various media outlets and parties. He asserted that his club, coaching staff, and teammates understand his true character and intentions within the team.
Maignan stressed that his actions did not aim to harm his team or shirk his responsibilities, clarifying that his intentions were misinterpreted following the incident.
Maignan’s red card complicated Milan’s task against Bournemouth, and the French goalkeeper may face a suspension from UEFA due to the incident.
