Jordan’s national football team faced a disappointing start in their first-ever World Cup appearance, losing 1-3 to Austria. The match took place on Wednesday evening during the opening round of Group 10 in the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Despite the loss, the Jordanian team, known as the “Nashama,” displayed competitive spirit throughout various phases of the game. However, their lack of experience on such a grand stage and some critical defensive errors prevented them from securing a positive result. Austria opened the scoring with a goal from Romano Schmidt in the 20th minute.
In a moment of triumph, Ali Alwan scored Jordan’s first-ever World Cup goal in the 50th minute, leveling the match. This goal marked a turning point, showcasing Jordan’s potential to compete at this level.
Even after equalizing, Jordan’s momentum faltered when defender Yazan Al Arab inadvertently scored an own goal in the 76th minute, allowing Austria to regain the lead. This mistake significantly impacted the players’ morale, leading to Austria’s dominance. In the 90+12 minute, Marco Arnautović sealed the victory for Austria with a penalty kick, concluding the match.
With this result, Austria secured their first three points in the group, placing them second behind Argentina, who defeated Algeria 3-0. Meanwhile, Jordan remains without points in their inaugural World Cup campaign.
Looking ahead, Jordan will face Algeria in an all-Arab clash in their next match, while Austria prepares to meet Argentina in a highly anticipated showdown. The Nashama aim to improve their performance in upcoming games to achieve positive results.
