Binance has disclosed information about what it describes as the largest cyber attack in cryptocurrency history. Hackers stole digital assets valued at 6.3 billion dollars through a complex operation that began by targeting several software engineers working for the platform.
The platform explained that the attackers employed a fake job interview and digital advertisements containing malware to infiltrate the engineers’ devices. They then exploited stolen credentials to gain control over systems linked to digital wallet management.
The attack commenced in June when a contaminated tool was downloaded. Another engineer fell victim during a fake online job interview, which later allowed the attackers to access sensitive systems within the platform.
Binance reported that the hackers executed a large-scale withdrawal of digital assets within minutes, involving hundreds of millions of cryptocurrency units. The company managed to freeze a portion of the affected assets and suspended withdrawals while implementing urgent security measures.
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has accused a hacking group associated with North Korea of orchestrating the attack. However, Pyongyang has denied these allegations.
Binance confirmed that it will compensate all customers affected by the breach. The platform is also enhancing its investments in AI-supported security and detection technologies, alongside launching joint research initiatives to bolster cybersecurity and protect digital assets.
