Jordan Affirms Strong Relations with Syria Amid Counterterrorism Efforts

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has expressed its pride in the fraternal relations with the Syrian Arab Republic. Jordan aims to enhance these ties to serve the interests of both nations and strengthen joint coordination in addressing security challenges, particularly the threat posed by ISIS.

Ongoing Coordination in Counterterrorism

Jordan’s Minister of Government Communication and official government spokesperson, Mohammad Momani, clarified that coordination between Jordan and Syria in combating terrorism, as well as arms and drug smuggling, occurs in a systematic and continuous manner. This collaboration reflects both countries’ commitment to establishing security and stability in the region.

Military Operations Targeting ISIS

Momani stated that the Jordanian Armed Forces conducted military operations targeting ISIS positions within Syrian territory. These actions relied on field intelligence aimed at neutralizing threats and terrorist operations that could affect Jordan.

Initial Results of the Operations

Preliminary results from these operations indicate that more than 20 ISIS members were killed, and a significant weapons depot belonging to the organization was destroyed.

Response to Recent Attacks

The airstrikes were a direct response to an attack on a church in Karak Governorate, southern Jordan. Momani confirmed that the three attackers were Jordanian nationals with connections to targeted groups in Syria.

Civilian Casualties and Ongoing Monitoring

The Jordanian government expressed regret over civilian casualties, emphasizing that it avoided targeting locations where civilians were present based on available information. Relevant authorities are actively monitoring this issue in collaboration with the Syrian side.

Joint Committee for Enhanced Coordination

Jordan also announced plans to work with Syria to establish a joint committee. This committee will address the repercussions of the military operation against ISIS and enhance bilateral coordination in counterterrorism efforts to ensure the security of both nations and protect civilians.
