Israeli Occupation: A Central Factor in Middle East Instability

Ahmad Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, has underscored that the ongoing crisis in the Middle East should not overshadow its fundamental cause: the persistent Israeli occupation of Palestine and other Arab territories. During a recent session of the United Nations Security Council focused on the Middle East, Aboul Gheit highlighted the critical tensions affecting the region.

Israeli Occupation Policies

Aboul Gheit clarified that Arab nations have not sought conflict with Iran; rather, their objective has been to avoid it. Despite these intentions, Arab nations have faced unprovoked Iranian attacks, which the Arab League has condemned unequivocally. He pointed out that Israel employs a strategy aimed at sustaining military confrontations across multiple fronts. This strategy encompasses several concerning practices:

  • Land Grabs: Israel continues to seize land in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria under the guise of security.
  • Unprecedented Settlement Policies: The alarming expansion of settlements in the West Bank remains a critical issue.
  • Encouragement of Settler Violence: The Israeli government has cultivated an environment conducive to settler terrorism.
  • Destabilization of the Horn of Africa: Israel’s recognition of a separatist region in Somalia has further complicated regional stability.

Support for UNRWA and Palestinian Rights

Aboul Gheit reiterated the Arab League’s unwavering support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which serves as the principal provider of education and health services in Gaza. He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding UNRWA from any attempts aimed at undermining its critical role. Additionally, he cautioned against an Israeli plan to effectively annex the West Bank through the acceleration of settlement expansions and the enactment of laws facilitating the seizure of Palestinian land, actions that violate UN Security Council Resolution 2334.

Call for Peace in Lebanon

In relation to Lebanon, Aboul Gheit affirmed the Arab League’s support for the Lebanese government’s endeavors to reclaim state sovereignty over decisions concerning war and peace. He highlighted the urgent need to cease mutual aggressions and ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all Lebanese territories.

In conclusion, Aboul Gheit stated that the belief that military power alone can guarantee security is a misconception. He asserted that genuine security is contingent upon achieving peace rooted in justice. He urged the Security Council to take an active role in fostering justice and stability for the region and its inhabitants.
