Israeli authorities have announced a decision to confiscate 109.79 dunams of land surrounding the towns of Nabi Samuel and Beit Iksa, located northwest of Jerusalem. This action has been justified by officials as necessary for “developing and preserving an archaeological site” in the area. However, this move is part of a broader trend of land confiscation around Jerusalem, which reflects ongoing efforts to impose new realities on the ground.
According to a statement from the Jerusalem Governorate, the targeted lands include vital agricultural fields and open spaces. The statement underscored that the decision also impacts the Nabi Samuel Mosque, a significant religious and historical landmark positioned above the archaeological site. This situation raises serious concerns regarding the potential repercussions for the mosque and highlights the authorities’ repeated attempts to assert control over Palestinian archaeological sites.
The Jerusalem Governorate has emphasized that these actions signify a systematic policy aimed at seizing Palestinian archaeological sites under the pretense of “development and restoration.” Such a strategy serves to reinforce the Israeli narrative surrounding Jerusalem while marginalizing Palestinian and Islamic perspectives in the public discourse of the city. In this context, these so-called “development” projects transform into mechanisms for asserting sovereignty and creating a new reality in occupied Jerusalem.
Consequently, these policies pose a tangible threat to security and stability within the region, exacerbating the existing conflict. Moreover, they raise critical questions regarding the future of Jerusalem and the rights of its residents.
In light of these troubling developments, the Jerusalem Governorate has called upon the international community to take a firm stance against the ongoing policies of occupation. It is imperative for international actors to apply pressure on the authorities to cease these violations, which threaten Palestinian cultural and religious heritage, and to safeguard the rights of Palestinians to their land.
