Minister of Information Raises Alarm
Minister of Information Muammar Al-Eryani has expressed serious concerns regarding Iran’s insistence on establishing a direct air bridge with the Houthi militia. He emphasized that this initiative is not merely a new smuggling route; rather, it represents a dangerous escalation in Iran’s support for the militia. This air bridge would enable Tehran to supply the Houthis more swiftly and regularly, especially after the tightening of maritime smuggling networks that Iran has relied on for years to transport weapons and experts into Yemen.
Significant Shift in Supply Methods
Al-Eryani explained that air transport fundamentally differs from traditional maritime smuggling routes. Air delivery drastically reduces supply times from days or weeks to mere hours. Additionally, it minimizes the chances of interception and inspection, allowing for the rapid and consistent delivery of sensitive equipment, spare parts, military technology, and Revolutionary Guard experts. This capability significantly enhances the Houthi militia’s ability to rebuild its military strength in short timeframes.
Increased Security Risks
The minister highlighted the most alarming aspect of this air bridge: it allows Iran to transport military, security, and intelligence figures, as well as specialists in missiles, drones, and electronic warfare, with greater secrecy. This situation arises from the lack of oversight by the legitimate government and established monitoring mechanisms. Consequently, Sana’a Airport risks becoming a logistical hub for Iran’s regional ambitions.
Challenges in Cargo Verification
Al-Eryani pointed out that the risks extend beyond personnel movement. The difficulty in verifying the nature of shipments could lead to the smuggling of small, high-value components, such as electronic chips, communication systems, routers, and dual-use technologies. These items are crucial for developing missiles and drones, yet they are often difficult to detect.
Implications for Regional Security
The minister asserted that allowing this air bridge effectively grants Iran a secure and sustainable corridor to manage its operations within Yemen. It would bypass restrictions on its maritime networks, undermine international sanctions, and transform Sana’a Airport into a strategic base for Iranian projects. This development poses significant threats to Yemen’s security, as well as to the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, and the Gulf of Aden, increasing risks to international trade and energy security.
Call to Action for the International Community
Al-Eryani stressed that this issue transcends a mere flight operation; it involves preventing the establishment of a new strategic corridor that could reshape Iran’s military supply system in the region. He affirmed that the Yemeni government will take all necessary legal actions to protect the sovereignty of Yemen and prevent the exploitation of its territory and airports for Iranian purposes.
The minister renewed his call for the international community, the United Nations, and the Security Council to fulfill their legal and moral responsibilities. He urged them to take decisive measures to prevent the misuse of civil aviation as a cover for military support to the Houthi militia. Ensuring strict adherence to Security Council resolutions and related sanctions is crucial for maintaining regional and international peace and stability, thereby preventing the emergence of new pathways that threaten the stability of the region and the world.
