On Sunday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed the Charge d’Affaires of the People’s Republic of China, Zhao Cheng, to discuss bilateral relations and regional stability.
During the meeting, Zhao conveyed warm greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping. He expressed wishes for President Alimi’s health and happiness, as well as for peace and stability for the Yemeni people. In response, President Alimi sent his regards to President Xi and the friendly Chinese nation, wishing them continued progress and prosperity.
President Alimi emphasized Yemen’s pride in its historical relationship with China. He acknowledged China’s significant role in supporting Yemen’s development and stability. The President expressed his desire to elevate these relations to new heights, benefiting both nations and their peoples.
The conversation also addressed ongoing consultations between the Yemeni government and permanent members of the UN Security Council. This dialogue precedes an emergency session scheduled for tomorrow, requested by the Yemeni government, to discuss Iran’s violation of Yemeni sovereignty through a flight to Sanaa Airport, controlled by Houthi militias.
In this context, President Alimi highlighted the dangers of encroaching on Yemen’s exclusive sovereign rights. He warned that any repetition of such attempts would escalate tensions and test the international community’s commitment to the principles established over the past eight decades.
The President reiterated that only the Yemeni government holds the legal authority to grant permits for international flights to Yemen. He stressed that no armed group, regardless of its control, should exercise sovereign powers or establish foreign relations on behalf of Yemen.
President Alimi cautioned that any direct dealings with Houthi militias regarding these sovereign matters undermine UN Security Council resolutions. Such actions would grant unrecognized powers to these groups, posing a threat to international stability and the integrity of the global order.
The President acknowledged China’s principled stance on respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He expressed hope that this position would reflect in the current situation, as it serves as a true test of these foundational principles.
President Alimi reaffirmed Yemen’s unwavering commitment to the One China policy, rejecting any actions that threaten China’s territorial unity or sovereignty. He also expressed gratitude for China’s ongoing support for Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of this support in countering attempts to undermine Yemeni state institutions.
Dr. Yahya Al-Shaibi, Director of the Presidential Office, attended the meeting alongside President Alimi and the Chinese Charge d’Affaires.
This meeting underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing regional challenges and maintaining stability in Yemen.
