A recent report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reveals that approximately 97,174 illegal migrants arrived in Yemen during the first half of 2026. This figure highlights the ongoing influx of African migrants seeking better economic opportunities or fleeing conflicts in their home countries.
In June 2026 alone, Yemen welcomed 13,339 migrants, marking a 15% increase from May, which recorded 11,587 arrivals. Data indicates that 80% of these migrants reached Yemen via the coasts of Djibouti, landing in the provinces of Abyan and Taiz. The remaining 20% arrived from Somalia, entering through Shabwa.
The report attributes the increase in arrivals, particularly to Abyan province, to the suspension of security operations targeting smuggling networks in June. Following intensive crackdowns in previous months, smuggling activities decreased significantly, allowing more migrants to cross into Yemen.
Yemen annually receives tens of thousands of African migrants crossing the sea in search of economic opportunities or fleeing local conflicts. However, these migrants encounter severe challenges, including dire humanitarian conditions, lack of security, and inadequate basic services. Such circumstances render their journeys perilous and necessitate international humanitarian support.
The international community must take action to support Yemen in addressing the influx of illegal migrants, as this issue poses both security and humanitarian challenges. International cooperation is crucial to ensure the provision of necessary protection and services for migrants and to improve conditions in their countries of origin.
