Houthi militia forces restaurants in Sana’a to provide free meals for their fighters during Ramadan.

Houthi Militias Force Restaurants in Sana'a to Provide Free Meals

In a troubling development, Houthi militias have compelled popular restaurants in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, to serve free meals to hundreds of young people and children. These individuals were lured from various neighborhoods and rural areas to mosques during the holy month of Ramadan. The militias aim to indoctrinate these youths and recruit them into their ranks.

Coercive Campaign Against Local Restaurants

Sources in Sana’a report that Houthi supervisors and armed members from the General Mobilization Office conducted a field campaign targeting the city’s most renowned eateries. They forced these establishments to pay both in-kind and cash tributes. Furthermore, the group mandated restaurants to prepare daily iftar and suhoor meals for their followers participating in intensive mobilization activities at Al-Saleh Mosque, the Grand Mosque, and other mosques throughout the city.

Financial Extortion and Taxation

The sources indicate that the militia leaders did not stop at meal provisions. They also pressured restaurant owners to pay varying financial tributes under the guise of a sales tax to cover the costs of these campaigns. Restaurant owners have voiced their frustrations over the ongoing harassment and extortion, as the militias demand diverse food offerings for their members while also imposing additional financial burdens under various pretexts.

Impact on the Commercial Sector

This initiative forms part of a broader strategy by the Houthi militia to tighten their grip on the commercial sector. Through intimidation and coercion, they force business owners to pay levies to finance their military fronts. Additionally, the group has resorted to arrests and the confiscation of properties, further exacerbating the challenges faced by local businesses.

In summary, the actions of the Houthi militia not only threaten the livelihoods of restaurant owners but also pose a significant risk to the social fabric of the community. As these tactics continue, the impact on the local economy and the well-being of citizens remains a pressing concern.
