Houthi militia demolishes parts of a citizen’s home and assaults him violently, raising concerns over escalating violence.

Houthi Militias Condemned for Demolishing Home and Assaulting Citizen in Ibb

A human rights network has strongly condemned the Houthi militia for demolishing parts of a citizen’s home and physically assaulting him in Ibb Governorate. This incident highlights ongoing human rights violations in the region.

Details of the Incident

The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms reported that, just days ago, the Houthi militia demolished parts of the home belonging to citizen Majid Abdullah Mbarez. During this attack, they severely beat him and threatened his children with weapons while they were inside the house. This act represents a blatant violation of religious and humanitarian values, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

Violations of Human Rights

The network emphasized that such criminal behavior constitutes a serious violation of the right to physical safety, personal security, and the sanctity of the home. It also infringes upon children’s rights, which are protected by Islamic law and international treaties, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Legal Implications

The statement asserted that demolishing homes or parts of them outside the judicial framework constitutes a legally prohibited collective punishment. Furthermore, physical assaults and threats against civilians, including children, rise to the level of crimes that warrant accountability and prosecution.

Call for Accountability

The network holds the Houthi militia fully responsible for the safety of Mbarez and his family. It demands an immediate halt to all forms of violations against civilians in the governorate.

International Community Urged to Act

The network renewed its call to the international community, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and relevant special rapporteurs on adequate housing and the situation of human rights defenders. It urged them to fulfill their legal and moral responsibilities regarding the systematic violations faced by civilians in Yemen and to take urgent measures to protect them.

This incident underscores the urgent need for international attention and action to address the ongoing human rights crisis in Yemen.
