Houthi forces assault youth in Tahrir Square, Sana’a, raising concerns over escalating violence in the region.

Houthi Militias Attack Youth Celebrating Yemen’s National Pride

Incident Occurs Ahead of 62nd Anniversary of September 26 Revolution

Houthi militias violently confronted young people waving the national flag and chanting patriotic slogans in Tahrir Square, Sana’a, on the eve of the 62nd anniversary of the September 26 Revolution. This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Yemen as citizens express their national pride.

Video Evidence of the Assault

Activists circulated a video showing the attack on youth gathered in Tahrir Square, who were proudly displaying the national flag and chanting, “With our blood and spirit, we sacrifice for you, Yemen.” Eyewitnesses reported that Houthi militants aggressively targeted these individuals after a separate celebration held by the Houthis in the same area on Wednesday evening.

Conflicting Narratives

According to activists, the Houthi forces echoed their own chants, “With our blood and spirit, we sacrifice for you, Al-Aqsa,” while attacking the youth. The fate of those assaulted remains unclear, raising concerns about the safety of individuals expressing their patriotic sentiments.

Public Sentiment Amidst Fear

Despite the oppressive atmosphere enforced by the Houthis in Sana’a and other controlled provinces, many citizens celebrated the anniversary in small gatherings and individual displays of national pride. Numerous videos shared by activists captured these spontaneous celebrations, showcasing the resilience of the Yemeni people.

Heightened Security Measures

Since Tuesday evening, the Houthis have declared a state of emergency, deploying their forces across major streets to prevent any large gatherings. Fearing public unrest, they sought to suppress the commemoration of the September 26 Revolution.

Threats Against Celebrants

The Houthi leadership has explicitly banned any popular celebrations for the 62nd anniversary of the revolution. They issued threats of violence against anyone who dared to celebrate, with Houthi leader Nasr al-Din Amer labeling celebrants in Sana’a as “agents of Israel.” He warned, “Anyone who steps out into the streets will have their head broken.”

Crackdown on Dissent

The Houthi response to the public’s enthusiasm for the September 26 Revolution has been severe. Reports indicate widespread abductions of citizens across the provinces they control, targeting anyone who engages with the revolution on social media platforms.

This aggressive stance toward national celebrations underscores the ongoing struggle for freedom and expression in Yemen, as citizens continue to navigate the complexities of their political landscape.
