Heavy Rains and Flash Floods Cause Extensive Damage in Al Hudaydah

Unprecedented Weather Hits the City

Last night, the city of Al Hudaydah and its surrounding districts and rural villages experienced several hours of heavy rainfall accompanied by unprecedented strong winds. This severe weather event marks a significant occurrence in the region, affecting various aspects of life and infrastructure.

Buildings and Infrastructure Suffer

Local residents reported that the powerful winds led to the collapse of several old buildings and caused damage to hundreds of temporary structures housing displaced individuals. Among the affected was the building and halls of the former 26 September cinema in the city’s alleys. Additionally, the winds were responsible for toppling trees, street signs, solar panels, and over 13 electricity poles, resulting in a complete power outage across Al Hudaydah.

Floodwaters Reach New Heights

Local sources indicated that the districts and villages of Al Hudaydah governorate witnessed devastating flash floods last night. The floodwaters reached areas previously untouched by such events in recent years. The surge was so powerful that it entirely cut off the main road connecting Beit al-Faqih district with Raima governorate. Moreover, strong floods from the “Ajay” valley in Zabid led to the severance of the road between Al Husainiya and Zabid districts.

Ongoing Rainfall and Absence of Authorities

For the past two weeks, the coastal governorate of Al Hudaydah has been facing continuous heavy rainfall, resulting in significant loss of life and property. This natural disaster comes amidst a complete absence of response from the Houthi militia authorities, leaving the residents to face the consequences on their own.

Conclusion

The recent weather events in Al Hudaydah highlight the urgent need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in the region. With the ongoing rainfall and the apparent lack of official support, the residents of Al Hudaydah are bracing for more challenges ahead. The community calls for immediate action to mitigate the effects of these disasters and prevent further loss and damage.
