On Friday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his support for the official signing of the Washington Peace and Prosperity Agreements between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. The agreements were signed in Washington, D.C., with the assistance of the United States.
Guterres emphasized that these agreements mark a significant milestone in restoring trust between the two nations. He praised the substantial progress made through the Doha Process and the African Union efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace.
The Secretary-General urged all parties involved to uphold their commitments, particularly regarding the respect for a permanent ceasefire as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2773 (2025). He reiterated the UN’s readiness, including the MONUSCO mission, to continue supporting all initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable peace and stability in the DRC and the surrounding region.
