The Meteorological Forecasting and Early Warning Center, part of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology, has issued a warning regarding the potential impact of thunderstorms and varying rainfall intensity in the temporary capital, Aden, and several provinces across the country. The forecast predicts locally heavy rainfall and the possibility of flash floods from October 22 to 25.
The center’s advisory indicates that the ongoing influence of a low-pressure system south of the Socotra Archipelago, based on numerical model outputs and weather map analysis, suggests opportunities for thunderstorms, increased winds, and rough seas in the next 72 hours.
The anticipated weather conditions will affect Aden, coastal areas, and the territorial waters in the Gulf of Aden. Additionally, provinces such as Hadramaut, Shabwa, and Abyan will experience varying rainfall intensity, with some areas likely to see heavy rainfall.
The center noted that thunderstorms may continue over the Socotra Archipelago and the surrounding waters in the Arabian Sea, particularly in the eastern and southern parts of the archipelago. The weather system’s effects may extend to the highlands, internal plateaus, and western slopes, including parts of the provinces of Taiz, Ibb, Al-Dhale, Al-Mahwit, and Hajjah, potentially reaching the western coastal plains.
The center urges residents in Aden and the affected provinces to exercise caution. Citizens should avoid crossing valleys and flood channels during and after rainfall, as sudden floods and rising water levels pose significant risks in low-lying areas.
The center also warned of reduced horizontal visibility during thunderstorms, which may accompany lightning, thunderstorm activity, and sudden downdraft winds. It advised taking necessary precautions to mitigate potential risks.
Regarding marine conditions, the center cautioned about rough seas and high waves in the affected areas. Fishermen and sea-goers should remain vigilant and follow marine bulletins, especially in the Arabian Sea and around the Socotra Archipelago and eastern Gulf of Aden.
The Meteorological Forecasting and Early Warning Center confirmed that it will continue to monitor the weather situation around the clock. Citizens are encouraged to stay updated with official bulletins and announcements from the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology.
