Yemen’s Stance on Peace Efforts
The Yemeni government has reaffirmed its commitment to support all regional and international efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. In a statement delivered by Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, at an open session of the UN Security Council in New York, the government also called on the Security Council and the international community to take their responsibilities seriously. They urged for real pressure to be applied on the Houthi militias, accusing them of obstructing peace and dragging Yemen into proxy wars that serve Iran’s destructive agenda in the region.
Decade-Long Struggle for Peace
The statement highlighted that despite a decade of efforts and initiatives aimed at achieving peace, the Iran-backed Houthi militias continue to undermine these endeavors. The militias show no regard for the suffering of the resilient Yemeni people, despite significant regional and international momentum to revive the political process. The efforts of Saudi Arabia and the concessions made by the Yemeni government in support of a peaceful resolution were specifically commended.
Houthi Intransigence and Escalation
The Yemeni representative criticized the Houthis for their stubbornness and continued escalation, which has hindered peace efforts. The militias have been accused of perpetuating military aggression in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, and targeting international navigation, thereby threatening regional and international security. Their actions, including crimes and violations against civilians, are seen as attempts to crush the will of the Yemeni people and prolong the conflict, exacerbating human suffering.
Economic and Environmental Challenges
The statement also addressed the severe economic challenges faced by the Yemeni government, including a significant loss of public resources due to the Houthis’ targeting of oil export ports. Despite these obstacles, the government continues to implement reforms aimed at restoring confidence in state institutions and enhancing transparency and accountability to mitigate the economic, social, and humanitarian impacts.
The government expressed gratitude for the support from international partners, particularly highlighting the contributions of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in alleviating humanitarian and economic impacts. The statement also condemned the Houthi militias for targeting the Safer oil facility in Marib with drones, emphasizing the risk of a major environmental disaster that could affect the region.
International Response and Humanitarian Crisis
The Yemeni government’s statement underscored the dire humanitarian situation resulting from the conflict, including the loss of lives, displacement, and widespread hunger. It criticized the international community’s response to the kidnapping of international and local organization workers by the Houthis, calling for a firmer stance against these violations of international law.
In conclusion, the Yemeni government’s message at the UN Security Council session was a call to action for the international community to intensify efforts to pressure the Houthi militias towards peace, address the economic and environmental challenges exacerbated by the conflict, and support Yemen’s path to recovery and stability.
