Forty-four people sustained injuries, including one in critical condition, when a regional train derailed in Normandy, northern France, on Friday evening. Authorities have launched an extensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Reuters, the derailment occurred around 7:30 PM local time while the train was carrying 180 passengers on its route between the cities of Rouen and Caen. Regional administrative official Jean-Benoît Albertini confirmed that the critically injured individual was airlifted for medical treatment.
A spokesperson for the French police stated that the train derailed after colliding with an unknown object, but did not provide details about the nature of the object or how it ended up on the tracks. The French railway company SNCF has confirmed that it is conducting an investigation to pinpoint the exact cause of the derailment.
French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot reported that the train derailed near the town of Cléon, noting that approximately 140 firefighters were deployed to assist the injured. Authorities have urged residents to avoid the area surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, SNCF announced the suspension of train services between Rouen and Caen, as well as between Caen and Le Havre, providing alternative bus services for passengers.
