A recent research brief reveals that the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is exploring the potential impacts of increasing the number of teams in the 2030 World Cup from 48 to 64. This proposed expansion could mark an unprecedented change in the tournament’s history, as indicated by documents currently available.
FIFA aims to appoint an independent agency to assess whether the proposed increase will affect the tournament’s format, competition level, match scheduling, and organizational structure. The federation expects to receive proposals from the designated agency by August 7, with a decision to be announced within seven days. The final analysis is anticipated by September 11.
The 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, already witnessed a historic expansion with 48 teams participating for the first time. This change sparked extensive discussions about the future of the tournament and the possibility of further increasing the number of participants in subsequent editions.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces mounting pressure regarding plans to attract private investments for a company managing the World Cup. These plans have met resistance from three continental federations and even led to the resignation of Infantino’s chief advisor.
Concerns primarily revolve around the potential for investors to push for larger and more frequent tournaments to maximize profits. Such a shift could alter the nature of the competition and disrupt the balance among continental federations.
