Major European retailers have swiftly updated their systems and enhanced cybersecurity protocols after a new wave of cyberattacks targeted refrigeration systems across several European countries.
These attacks manipulated the temperatures of refrigerators and freezers in stores across eight European nations, forcing retailers to dispose of large quantities of spoiled food products.
Swedish retail chain Coop confirmed that it has begun transitioning to more secure communication networks and technologies. The company has also restarted operations at affected branches after disconnecting refrigeration systems from the internet as a precautionary measure.
Danfoss, a company specializing in industrial software systems, advised clients against allowing direct internet access to refrigeration systems. They emphasized the importance of implementing the latest security updates.
Cybersecurity experts urged retailers to expedite the examination of their refrigeration control systems to ensure they are secure and updated. They recommended disconnecting these systems from the internet immediately if any potential security risks arise.
The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity highlighted that the widespread nature of the attacks across multiple countries underscores the need for enhanced European cooperation. They called for accelerated information sharing and coordinated responses to cyber incidents.
Security reports also indicated attempts to target small companies within the food industry in the United Kingdom. Authorities continue their investigations to identify those responsible for the attacks and to prevent future incidents.
