Sheikh Sultan Al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, commended the European Union (EU) for its humanitarian and developmental interventions in Yemen. He noted the EU’s critical support for displaced individuals and essential sectors, including water, health, and education. Al-Barakani stressed the importance of sustaining this support in light of the escalating challenges faced by the nation.
In a phone conversation with Patrick Simonnet, the EU Ambassador to Yemen, Al-Barakani expressed his gratitude for the ambassador’s recent field visit to Taiz and various districts within the province. This visit aimed to assess the prevailing conditions, historical landmarks, and the existing humanitarian and developmental needs in the area.
Al-Barakani highlighted the significance of Ambassador Simonnet’s visit in bolstering the presence of international partners in Yemen. He noted that the ambassador’s firsthand observations of the humanitarian and developmental challenges in Taiz would facilitate improved collaboration. Furthermore, he commended the EU’s efforts to promote stability and enhance living conditions within the region.
In response, Ambassador Simonnet confirmed that the visit was intended to evaluate the situation on the ground. He sought to comprehend the progress of ongoing projects and their effectiveness in improving livelihoods and essential services for local communities. He also discussed potential areas for future support to address the pressing humanitarian and developmental needs effectively.
Ambassador Simonnet expressed satisfaction with his visit and the insights gained regarding Taiz’s economic, security, service, and humanitarian conditions. He appreciated the warm welcome extended to him and his delegation, extending his thanks to Al-Barakani for his engagement throughout the visit. The ambassador remarked on the prevailing sense of security and tranquility in Taiz.
The delegation accompanying Ambassador Simonnet included Deputy Ambassador Luis Bueno, Peace and Security Officer Wael Abdul-Shafi, EU Program Director Shahra Naqshbandi, and the ambassador’s translator and aide, Osama Al-Saghir. This visit underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting Yemen during these challenging times, reinforcing international partnerships to address urgent humanitarian and developmental needs.
