Damascus International Airport reopened its doors today, Tuesday, January 7, following a month-long halt in operations. This resumption comes in the wake of significant political developments in Syria, including the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
A spokesperson for the airport confirmed that two flights will depart for the United Arab Emirates today. Additionally, the first flight arriving in Syria from Qatar is expected to land around noon. This marks a crucial step towards restoring normalcy in air travel for the region.
On Monday, the Damascus Air Traffic Control Authority announced that the airport would begin offering regular international flight services starting at 8:00 AM local time today. This decision reflects a broader effort to reinstate international connectivity and support economic recovery.
The airport had suspended all flights since December 23, 2022, with the exception of those granted special permission by the Civil Aviation Authority. The head of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, Ashhad Al-Salibi, had previously indicated that international flights would resume on January 7, further signaling a return to normal operations.
The reopening of Damascus International Airport represents a significant milestone for the region as it seeks to recover from recent upheavals. Travelers can now look forward to renewed flight options, enhancing both tourism and business opportunities in Syria.
