Baku, Azerbaijan – Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen, wrapped up his participation in the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.

Addressing the Impact of Climate Change on Yemen

During the summit, Dr. Al-Alimi delivered a speech highlighting the adverse effects of climate change on Yemen. He discussed the significant damage caused by tropical cyclones, droughts, and rising sea levels, which exacerbate the vulnerability of the country’s environmental and economic resources.

Advocating for Financial and Technical Support

In addition to his speech, Dr. Al-Alimi participated in several side events and roundtable discussions. These sessions focused on transitioning to renewable energy and enabling climate financing. He urged the international community to provide financial and technical support to Yemen, emphasizing the need to tackle climate challenges and enhance sustainable development strategies.

Launch of the National Climate Financing Program

Dr. Al-Alimi announced the launch of the National Climate Financing Program for 2025-2030. This initiative aims to strengthen Yemen’s response to climate challenges. The announcement took place in the presence of representatives from international organizations, relevant government sectors, civil society, and the private sector.

Strengthening International Cooperation

Throughout the summit, Dr. Al-Alimi held a series of meetings with various world leaders and international officials. He discussed ways to enhance collaborative efforts to address climate impacts and coordinated strategies to secure necessary international funding to support Yemen’s vital sectors affected by climate change.

Emphasizing Unity and Collaboration

Dr. Al-Alimi concluded his meetings with a gathering of government entities, Yemeni organizations, and representatives from international and regional organizations, as well as the private and banking sectors. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to serve Yemen, noting that every Yemeni voice matters regardless of the represented entity. He expressed gratitude to the organizations that facilitated Yemeni participation in these critical international forums amid the challenges facing the country.

Acknowledging Azerbaijan’s Successful Hosting

In his remarks, Dr. Al-Alimi congratulated the leadership, government, and people of Azerbaijan for successfully hosting the summit. He commended Azerbaijan’s efforts to enhance international cooperation in addressing climate challenges.

Accompanying Delegation

Dr. Al-Alimi was accompanied by several key officials, including Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries Salem Al-Saqtri, and Ambassador Ahmed Al-Sharabi, head of the Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Farewell from Azerbaijani Officials

The Vice Minister of Science and Education of Azerbaijan, Idris Isayev, bid farewell to Dr. Al-Alimi as he concluded his visit.

This participation marks a crucial step for Yemen in addressing climate change and seeking international support for its ongoing challenges.
