Ataq Airport welcomes its first flight after years of inactivity, with Shabwa’s governor applauding the airport’s operational restart.

Ataq International Airport Welcomes First Flight After Years of Inactivity

In a significant development, Ataq International Airport today received its first flight from Aden International Airport, marking the end of a hiatus that lasted several years. The flight, operated by the Belgian branch of the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF), was warmly received by Fahd Al-Khalifi, the Deputy Governor of Shabwa Province, and Salem Hamed, the General Director of Ataq Airport.

A Warm Welcome and Future Prospects

Shabwa Governor Awad bin Al-Wazir expressed his delight at the resumption of operations at Ataq International Airport. He highlighted the importance of the inaugural flight by Doctors Without Borders, which operates in the Ataq Public Hospital for Motherhood and Childhood, as a significant step towards revitalizing the airport’s activities. Governor Al-Wazir also conveyed his eagerness for other international organizations to resume their flights to Ataq, emphasizing the airport’s strategic importance to the surrounding provinces.

The governor appreciated the support from Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, the President of the Presidential Leadership Council, the government, and the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology. Their collective efforts in rehabilitating the airport and resuming air navigation services have made it capable of accommodating various flight operations. Governor Al-Wazir looks forward to the initiation of both domestic and international flights from and to Ataq Airport, signaling a new era of connectivity for the region.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

The resumption of flights to Ataq International Airport is a crucial step towards enhancing the accessibility and economic development of Shabwa Province and its neighboring areas. The support from national leaders and international organizations like Doctors Without Borders underscores the collaborative effort to rebuild and expand Yemen’s aviation infrastructure. As Ataq Airport gears up for more domestic and international flights, it stands as a testament to the resilience and progress in the face of challenges.

The reopening of Ataq International Airport is not only a milestone for the Shabwa Province but also a beacon of hope for the revitalization of Yemen’s aviation sector, promising improved connectivity and support for humanitarian efforts across the region.
