As it reaches the Egyptian coast, the Freedom Flotilla ship approaches Gaza.

Humanitarian Ship "Madeleine" Approaches Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict
The humanitarian ship "Madeleine," carrying 12 activists, has reached the waters off the Egyptian coast on its way to the besieged Gaza Strip, according to campaign organizers on Saturday.
Mission to Deliver Aid and Break the Siege
The ship, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, departed from Sicily on Sunday. Its mission focuses on delivering humanitarian aid and highlighting the ongoing suffering in Gaza, where the United Nations warns that all residents face the threat of famine.
German human rights activist Yasmin Akar shared with AFP, "We are currently sailing off the Egyptian coast. Everything is going well."
A Bold Challenge to Injustice
The "International Committee to Break the Siege on Gaza" issued a statement from London, declaring, "The approach of the Madeleine to Gaza’s shores represents a courageous challenge to the unjust policies that besiege civilians. It sends a message of solidarity from the free peoples of the world to our resilient community in Gaza."
The committee emphasized that the Freedom Flotilla Coalition maintains constant communication with international legal and human rights organizations to ensure the safety of the activists on board. They stressed that "any attack on the ship or interference with its mission constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law."
A History of Maritime Activism
The Madeleine is part of a series of maritime movements organized over the past years under the Freedom Flotilla initiative. This effort enjoys support and partnership from international civil alliances, notable figures, and humanitarian organizations worldwide.
Context of the Ongoing Conflict
The current conflict in Gaza erupted following an unprecedented attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. In response, Israel launched a devastating retaliatory war that has turned Gaza into rubble. The stated goal of this military action is to regain control of the territory, eliminate Hamas, and compel the group to release hostages taken during the attack.
Humanitarian Efforts Amidst Crisis
On Thursday, the Madeleine had to alter its course to rescue four Sudanese migrants stranded at sea, south of Greece and north of Libya and Egypt.
Founded in 2010, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition is a peaceful international solidarity movement that focuses on delivering humanitarian aid and protesting against the Israeli blockade imposed on Gaza’s residents.
Cargo of Hope
According to organizers, the Madeleine carries fruit juice, milk, rice, canned goods, and protein bars donated by hundreds of citizens from Catania, Sicily.
In early May, another ship that the Freedom Flotilla Coalition hoped would sail to Gaza from Malta suffered damage. Activists suspect it was attacked by an Israeli drone.
This ongoing mission underscores the persistent efforts to provide aid and raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza amidst a backdrop of escalating conflict.
