Elderly Man Severely Injured by Landmine Explosion in Hajja Governorate

An elderly man suffered severe injuries, resulting in the amputation of both legs, due to a landmine explosion left by the Houthi militia in the town of Midi, located in Hajja Governorate.

Incident Details

On Tuesday, the Yemen Mine Observatory reported that the elderly individual, identified as Thabit Jalhof, sustained serious injuries while tending to his sheep in the village of Al-Ja’da. The explosion occurred when he accidentally triggered a landmine planted by the Houthis.

Ongoing Threat of Landmines

The observatory highlighted that Al-Ja’da is a residential area heavily contaminated with landmines. Numerous incidents of landmine explosions have been recorded in this region. Unfortunately, demining teams have struggled to clear the area due to the random placement and high density of mines, coupled with limited resources for effective clearance operations.

Recent Related Incidents

This incident follows a recent case in which a child suffered multiple injuries, including the amputation of one hand, due to a booby-trapped explosive disguised as a toy. The child was injured in the Al-Muhsam area of Bani Hassan district in the same governorate.

Alarming Statistics on Landmines

Government reports indicate that the Houthi militia has planted over two million landmines and explosive devices across various Yemeni provinces since the onset of the conflict. These explosives have resulted in the deaths and injuries of thousands of civilians, highlighting a pressing humanitarian crisis.

The ongoing threat of landmines in Yemen continues to pose significant risks to civilians, particularly in areas like Hajja Governorate. Efforts to address this issue are critical to safeguarding communities from further harm.
