An eighth Palestinian infant has died from cold exposure in the Gaza Strip, highlighting the region’s dire humanitarian crisis.

Tragic Death of Infant in Gaza Due to Severe Cold

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Gaza as a 35-day-old infant succumbed to the harsh weather conditions and extreme cold. This tragic event highlights the growing crisis faced by vulnerable populations in the region.

Rising Death Toll Amid Harsh Weather

According to the Palestinian news agency “Ma’an,” medical sources reported that this incident marks an increase in fatalities linked to the severe cold, bringing the total number of deaths to eight. The alarming trend underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in Gaza.

UN Agency Warns of Impending Crisis

On Sunday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) stated that “cold weather and lack of shelter are leading to the deaths of newborns in Gaza.” The agency revealed that approximately 7,700 newborns currently lack life-saving care, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Potential Impact of Israeli Legislation

UNRWA has raised concerns about the potential paralysis of its operations due to an Israeli decision expected to take effect by the end of January. The agency issued a brief statement warning, “Time is running out regarding the potential ban, which could prevent us from providing services to millions of Palestinian refugees.”

Legislative Changes in Israel

On October 28, 2024, the Israeli parliament approved two laws: the first prohibits UNRWA from operating in Israel, set to take effect within three months, while the second terminates all Israeli dealings with the agency, nullifying previous agreements.

International Concern Over Legislative Actions

The United Nations expressed serious concern regarding the adoption of these laws. The organization urged the Israeli government to allow UNRWA to continue its vital work and to uphold Israel’s obligations under international law.

Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis

The conflict in Gaza escalated following an unprecedented attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. This attack resulted in the deaths of 1,208 individuals, according to official Israeli figures. The toll includes hostages who were killed or died in captivity.

During the assault, 251 individuals were kidnapped, with 96 still held in Gaza. The Israeli military reported that 34 of these individuals have since been confirmed dead.

Alarming Casualty Figures in Gaza

Since the onset of the conflict, at least 45,720 people have died in Gaza, with the majority being civilians, including women and children, as reported by the Gaza Ministry of Health. This staggering number reflects the dire humanitarian situation in the region.

As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the urgent need for international support and intervention has never been more critical.
