Minister of Water and Environment Discusses Water Sector Projects with World Bank Delegation

In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, engaged with a delegation from the World Bank to explore proposed projects aimed at enhancing Yemen’s water sector capabilities. The discussions focused on improving infrastructure and services for citizens.

Integrated Management and Early Warning Systems

The meeting, attended by Deputy Minister of Water and Environment Mujahid Bin Afrar, highlighted the Integrated Management and Early Warning project. This initiative aims to bolster readiness and response to climate change and environmental emergencies. Additionally, the infrastructure project seeks to rehabilitate water and sewage networks while improving operational efficiency in several provinces.

Water Desalination Initiatives

The two parties also addressed the critical water desalination project. They emphasized the importance of expanding sustainable desalination technologies as an alternative source to address water shortages, particularly in coastal areas facing severe resource scarcity.

Water Crisis in Taiz

A detailed presentation outlined the severe water crisis affecting Taiz Governorate. The presentation reviewed the accumulated challenges within the city’s water basin and identified factors that have exacerbated the crisis in recent years. These include population pressure, reduced funding sources, and delays in essential projects.

Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable Solutions

Minister Al-Sharjabi underscored the importance of partnering with the World Bank to support strategic projects that enhance water and environmental services. He noted that the ministry prioritizes integrated and sustainable projects that strengthen institutional resilience and serve the most affected areas, especially amid current economic and humanitarian challenges.

Urgent National Needs in the Water Sector

The minister described the meeting as a crucial opportunity to discuss urgent national needs in the water sector. He stressed the necessity of accelerating technical coordination to complete required studies and move to the implementation phase as soon as possible.

Commitment from the World Bank

The World Bank delegation reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Yemeni government and the Ministry of Water and Environment. They recognized the water sector as a vital priority in support and recovery plans. The delegation commended the ministry’s efforts despite exceptional circumstances and expressed readiness to provide technical and financial support for projects with direct and sustainable impacts, particularly in water resource management, desalination, and early warning systems.

This collaborative effort aims to address Yemen’s pressing water challenges and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
